Chemical Conversion Coatings
Commonly referred to as Chem Film and sometimes called by the trade names Alodine or Iridite, Chemical Conversion Coatings are used to passivate aluminum. It protects aluminum substrates from corrosion and serves as a base for organic coatings while leaving fabricated dimensions virtually unchanged.
Chem Film is applied by dipping, spraying or brushing. It is sometimes applied alongside Type II Anodizing and can be used to repair minor damage to anodized surfaces.
Precision Industrial Painting offers both types and classes in accordance with MIL-DTL-5541 using MIL-DTL-81706 compliant materials.
Type I contains hexavalent chromium. This film typically appears to be gold or brown in color with variations in intensity (light, dark, etc).
Type II contains no hexavalent chromium. This film typically appears to have a slight bluish or no color (clear), depending on the substrate or alloy being processed. Type II is ROHS compliant and is currently growing in popularity due to its minimal impact on the environment.
Class 3 is electrically conductive and best suited for components where low electrical resistance is required. This is a thin coating providing low contact resistance, and the coating weight is lower as is the corrosion resistance.
Class 1A is best suited for painted or unpainted components and offers the best corrosion protection.
Precision Industrial Painting’s chem film process passes both Adhesion and Salt Spray (minimum 168 hours) requirements in accordance with MIL-DTL-5541.
Other Chem Film Capabilities:
◦ Masking is available for selective surface chem filming
◦ Bulk or individual processing
Processes can be performed to other customer specifications as requested.
All processes comply with applicable industry specifications for the particular process involved and are performed under AS9100 and Nadcap standards. Specific company approvals may also apply.
